Manufacturing Engineer at North
Kitchener City, Ontario, CA

About You:

You are a creative and resourceful Manufacturing Engineer with a proven track record of executing projects on time in an NPI environment.  In this role you will interact heavily with various members of the Engineering, R&D, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Quality Teams, as we bring the next generation glasses to market. We are looking for someone with 5+ years in a Manufacturing Engineering role, with bonus points for working in high volume, consumer electronics environment. 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Within 15 days, 
    • Fully understand the components of Focals by reviewing available documentation and meeting with subject matter experts
    • Become familiar with  the entire Focals Manufacturing Process
    • Obtain a deep understanding of the current state of our next generation product(s) and manufacturing challenges
    • Become proficient with North’s various Manufacturing Systems
    • Complete all Health & Safety / Manufacturing Training
  • Within 60 days,
    • Work closely with a multi-disciplinary New Product Introduction team on the development of next-generation Smart Glasses with a focus on optimizing manufacturability
    • Identify best is class equipment & manufacturing processes for volume production
    • Support our Fixtures & Automation team by conducting proof of principle experiments and providing design feedback for continuous improvement
  • Beyond 60 days, 
    • Support product design validation activities and manufacturing readiness
    • Design, develop and refine volume manufacturing processes
    • Develop commissioning plans and support installation and acceptance testing of custom automation & calibration equipment 
    • Travel up to 25% to drive production ramp readiness with our global manufacturing partners in North America and Asia
    • Lead cross-functional teams for root cause / corrective action activities to optimize  yield and throughput


What you’ll need:

  • 5-10 years of manufacturing experience with high-volume world-class design and manufacturing techniques for consumer electronic electronics, compact imaging systems or optical systems.
  • Detailed knowledge of fabrication methods used in consumer electronics and compact imaging systems including injection mold tooling, sheet metal fabrication, die-casting, and lens molding. 
  • Detailed knowledge of high volume manufacturing processes including automated assembly & fastening, adhesive dispense & cure, US/Laser welding, and part marking / labelling. 
  • Experience with SolidWorks (preferred), FMEA, tolerance analysis, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT)
  • Versed in 6 sigma concepts such as DMAIC, Cp/Cpk, MSA/GR&R, DOE
  • BSC in Mechanical, Mechatronics or Manufacturing Eng.
  • Bonus for optical component or system manufacturing experience including telecommunications devices, cameras, pico-projectors, AR/VR devices, optical active alignment, and/or calibration of near-eye display systems.
