Safety & Compliance Engineer at Bossa Nova Robotics

Position: Safety & Compliance Engineer

Location: Mountain View, CA

The as a part of the Bossa Nova Quality team, you’d be expected to work in a collaborative environment. You’d be working cross functionally determining test applicability, testing procedures and what test makes the robot more complaint and then performing those tests either in-house or at 3rd party labs.


  • Based on knowledge of Robotics and Consumer Electronics Industry Safety & Regulatory Compliance Test Standards (IEC, ISO, UL, CE, ASTM, FCC, ANSI, ROHS, REACH, WEEE, etc.), collaboratively establish test procedures for testing robot safety.
  • Functional safety of the robot and dock at the component, sub-system, & full system level.
  • OSHA work place safety requirements in the customers application environment.
  • Based on the outcome of testing, collaborate cross-functionally to improve the design of the product.
  • Develop and assist the team with Risk/Safety Analysis process per ISO 12100.
  • Manage scheduling, availability and quotation process with agencies like UL, TUV, and Intertek to perform robot safety and EMI/EMC tests to FCC requirements.
  • Prepare concise and detailed test plans and reports.
  • Coordinate and collaborate Failure Analysis activities using analytical techniques and methodology to derive root cause analysis on robot and sub-system levels.
  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with FCC & EU requirements for wireless.
  • Work with cellular carriers (e.g. AT&T, Verizon) to understand their requirements and ensuring product compliance.
  • Lead safety incident investigations and corrective & preventive action (CAPA) activities.

Basic Qualifications

  • Typically requires 5-10 years of safety & compliance.
  • Testing in safety & compliance for complex systems is required.
  • Data collection, disposition and reporting abilities.
  • Minimum requirement of bachelors degree in electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • Confident with navigating in an ambiguous environment.
  • Experience in working in a dynamic engineering environment.
  • Experience in agency interaction and submission.
  • Experience in bug management, scheduling, & reporting systems using tools such as JIRA/Confluence and Smartsheets.
  • Experience in functional safety standards such as - ISO 13489-1, IEC 62061, and IEC 61508.
  • Experience with robotics systems and industrial grade battery systems.
  • Nice to have - mechanical and software engineering experience.
  • Nice to have - experience in automotive functional safety standards such as ISO26262.
  • Nice to have - ability to automate a variety of manual testing processes using scripting languages.
