Senior Research Engineer - Computational Imaging at Airy3D
Montreal, CA

We’re looking for an individual to lead a talented team of research engineers as we prepare to bring DepthIQ – our passive, single-sensor depth platform – to market. This is a unique opportunity to apply your experience in computational imaging across a wide variety of use cases that leverage imaging and depth data in markets spanning mobile, consumer, industrial and automotive.

Who are we and what do we do?

We are a rapidly growing team looking for people who share our passion for developing solutions at the intersection of imaging and depth. AIRY3D has developed DepthIQ™, a 3D computer vision platform that consists of a Transmissive Diffraction Mask and computational imaging software that can convert any camera sensor into a versatile 3D sensor at a fraction of the manufacturing cost.

Based in Montreal, AIRY3D recently raised US$10 million in series A funding led by Intel Capital. This financing will allow AIRY3D to advance its licensing roadmap for the first commercial adoptions of DepthIQ 3D by top-tier consumer electronics companies in mobile and other markets such as automotive and AR/VR.

What are we looking for?

To be successful in this role, you must bring computational imaging experience and leadership in equal measure to apply research results to novel solutions showcasing the unique possibilities and advantages of DepthIQ. We’re looking for someone to mentor others, setting an example of “what good looks like” for the software design, development and deployment process. And who is keen to roll up their sleeves and contribute wherever necessary.

What you will do:

The computational imaging team is responsible for developing and demonstrating our “secret sauce” that extracts depth from sensors equipped with our Transmissive Diffraction Mask. Responsibilities include leading the team and optimizing / tuning our DepthIQ depth acquisition algorithm and demo application software. Typical use cases include anti-spoofing for facial login, gesture recognition and 3D-scene creation.

What you will bring to our team:

  • At least 5 years experience developing computational imaging solutions.

  • Strong preference will be given to candidates with proven experience with depth solutions

(stereo, time of flight, structured light).

  • Solid technical background in image processing techniques such as image filtering, feature extraction, image enhancement, and image segmentation.

  • At least 2 years experience of team management.
  • A Master's Degree or PhD in Computer Science specializing in image processing, computational photography, computer vision.
  • Experience with computer vision applications such as face recognition, object detection/tracking, and gesture recognition/tracking.
  • Experience with OpenCV, OpenCL.
  • Attention to architectural considerations such as portability to embedded devices, real-time performance and efficient memory usage is required.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with Virtual/Augmented reality applications.
  • Experience with mobile camera applications.
  • Experience with industrial 3D applications.
  • Publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences or journals.

What's it like working in our team?

We believe in creating disruptive technology in a workplace with great work ethics, where we truly enjoy what we are doing and the diversity of those we work with. All while having fun and not taking ourselves too seriously! We offer a flexible schedule, vibrant Mile End location with rooftop terrace, health insurance and stock options. If you are genuinely excited about contributing to our success, we’d love to hear from you.

What can I expect when I submit my application?

Our recruitment partner – PIVOT + EDGE – will review your application and either schedule a conversation with you or let you know that we’re passing on your candidacy.

What does the interview process involve?

The first step is a conversation with PIVOT + EDGE where the focus will be on the human side of things. If you exhibit a high potential to be successful in our environment, a short video interview will allow you to demonstrate your technical capabilities. After we review your response, you may be asked to talk shop with some of our engineers and leaders. Assuming you’re one of our finalists, we’ll be sure to give you a tour of the office and introduce you to some of your future teammates. Throughout the process, we want to make sure that we’re the right fit for each other – both technically and culturally – so please interview us at every step!

AIRY3D is an equal opportunity employer. Should you require accommodation in any aspect of our selection process, please contact Jessalyn Martin of PIVOT + EDGE
