Head of Protocol Development, Chemistry at Synthego
Redwood City, CA, US
Synthego’s Engineering team prides itself in its breadth of skill sets and expertise that are largely responsible for new product and infrastructure development. To accomplish this, they have combined engineering, automation and science to solve the problems that no one discipline could tackle alone. As a Head of Protocol Development, Chemistry within Synthego’s System Engineering Team, you will champion the scientific foundation of Synthego’s fully automated, cloud-enabled, CRISPR factory. You will be heavily involved in process and production improvements, as well as new product development, taking on both the scientific challenges of process characterization and production launch, as well as key project coordination responsibilities.

What You'll Do

    • Automate RNA synthesis in a state of the art CRISPR facility.
    • Build and lead a world class team of scientists and research associates to develop our next generation lab and products.
    • Guide the design and execution of studies in order to optimize and fully understand all steps in the manufacturing process of synthetic oligonucleotides.
    • Create a pipeline process for transitioning new and customized products through trial phases into mainline operations.
    • Maintain expertise on alternate methods, techniques and best practices used in the field; routinely benchmark process performance.
    • Create a broad set of analytical tools and use them to make targeted improvements to automated systems across multiple labs / environments.
    • Evaluate critical tradeoffs and make decisions on resource requirements and allocations to set high-level initiative goals.
    • Handle multiple hardware and protocol implementations in parallel while streamlining and standardizing the process.
    • Gather requirements, create specifications, and document appropriately to guide the engineering teams in the development of new systems.
    • Support production activities; offer insight into troubleshooting methodology and problem resolution with complex instrumentation, systems or processes.
    • Ensure all work and results are recorded suitably for regulatory compliance.
    • Inform the design of our data capture and software integration systems for your products and protocols: In a large-scale, distributed, fully-automated cell line engineering factory, centralization of data is critical.
    • Supervise and train junior team members in best practices and standardized methodologies.
    • Work with Synthego’s custom hardware platforms and learn what it means to push scientific boundaries forward.

About You

    • Masters or PhD (preferred) in a relevant chemistry discipline: Organic Synthesis, Analytical Chemistry, Synthetic Biology
    • 10 years experience investigating, developing, and implementing automated laboratories or manufacturing processes
    • 3+ years of managing a technical team of scientists / engineers
    • You have a deep understanding of the methods for and effects of synthesis chemistry (from nmol to mmol), and how to build scalable processes to support them
    • No matter how simple the protocol, you’ve taken the time to understand the steps, constraints, and missing characterisation work prior to creating a supportable version for production
    • Getting a good result once doesn’t cut it - you’re always after a robust process that executes well each and every time (and if it doesn’t, knowing immediately why)
    • You understand how important well-defined qualifications are to the life-cycle of a product - IQ/OQ/PQ aren’t just letters, they are a way of life
    • You are familiar with the experimental and documentation overheads that come with being in a regulatory environment (cGxP, CLIA, CAP, ISO)
    • Multiple, medium-sized (quarter-long) projects running at the same time is something you are used to, both as an individual contributor and as project coordinator, and you’re looking to take on more
    • You have the ability to work diligently with minimal supervision and take initiative to drive project deadlines
    • You are meticulous in capturing goals, to-dos, and decisions made for yourself and those around you
    • You can work independently but consider yourself to be a team player

Nice to Haves

    • Broad knowledge of statistics / analytical methods
    • You can provide evidence of working with Biology / Chemistry at scale
