Graduate Photonics Intern at Ayar Labs
Emeryville, CA, US

As a Photonics Intern at Ayar Labs, you will work alongside world-class engineers and scientists in the field of electronics and photonics. You will work in a small, collaborative team building the next generation of computing technologies. Responsibilities include electromagnetic simulations of photonic devices (FDTD, modesolver, etc.), characterization and analysis of photonic devices (waveguides, input/output couplers, modulators, detectors, lasers), and script development of automated layout and verification of photonic devices. The ideal candidate is a hands-on self-starter who is able to develop and complete work based on input from colleagues and who can effectively manage his or her own time to take projects to completion.

  • Actively pursuing an MS or PhD in the field of integrated photonics. 
  • Experience designing and simulating photonic components using standard electromagnetic solvers (e.g. FDTD, FEM, modesolvers, etc.).
  • Experience with standard scientific computing software (e.g. Matlab or Python).
The Ideal Candidate Would Also Have: 
  • Knowledge of microring resonator theory, design, and characterization. 
  • Experience performing and analyzing data from electro-optical devices (wavelength spectra, I-V curves, high-speed modulation and detection, etc.).
  • Experience using standard electronic-photonic characterization equipment (OSA, swept wavelength lasers, sampling oscilloscopes, lightwave component analyzers, etc.).
  • Experience with instrument automation using Python or Matlab
  • Experience with thermo-optic simulations. 
  • Experience with modern version control workflows (e.g. Git).
  • Experience using Linux.
