Embedded System Engineer at Ayar Labs
Santa Clara, CA, US

The Embedded Systems Engineer will develop firmware for Ayar Labs’ electronic-photonic chips, design printed circuit boards (PCB) for test hardware, and perform initial chip bringup of custom systems-on-chip (SoC) platforms. As part of these roles, you will be expected to work with microcontrollers, FPGAs, and various board-level hardware/software to achieve the desired system functionality. You will be joining a small team in a dynamic startup environment, where each member is expected to take on a wide range of responsibilities and to learn and grow with the company. The ideal candidate is a hands-on self-starter who is able to develop and complete work based on input from colleagues and who can effectively manage his or her own time to take projects to completion with limited supervision and guidance.

  • Development and optimization of firmware used for controlling the hardware components of complex electronic-photonic chips 
  • Design and layout of printed circuit boards, as well development of the associated software, used to test custom Ayar Labs chips
  • Perform chip wake-up and initial functional test of new custom silicon
  • Work closely with both integrated circuit designers and optical designers to understand chip features and operating modes
  • Work closely with test engineers to hand off chip testing platform after initial silicon bringup
About You:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent skills and/or experience;
  • Strong programming background, with experience developing in both low-level programming languages (C/C++) as well as Python
  • Experience prototyping or designing PCB-level hardware, including schematic design, component selection, chip interface management (SPI, I2C, etc.), and PCB layout
  • Experience working with microcontrollers and FPGAs
  • Self-driven debugger who loves digging deeper to determine a root cause
The ideal candidate will also have:
  • Experience using DipTrace, Allegro, KiCAD, or other PCB design tools
  • Proficiency with version control software, such as Git
  • Proficiency in synchronous digital systems design and Verilog RTL
  • Silicon bringup experience
