Mechanical Equipment Design Lead at Joby Aviation

Joby Aviation is seeking a highly capable, passionate, individual to lead the design, build, and implementation of customized industrial equipment towards the goal of development, certification and production of eVTOL aircraft.  As the industrial equipment lead, this individual will have overall responsibility for design, build, implementation, and maintenance of Joby Aviation’s industrial equipment accordance with AS9100D and other applicable quality and regulatory standards.  The person in this role will also lead the selection of purchased industrial equipment used to manufacture Joby’s aircraft.


·         Designs customized industrial equipment including PLC controlled ovens, presses, robotic pick and place systems, basic CNC equipment, data logging, and other manufacturing equipment
·         Oversees and assists in the manufacturing, commissioning, and qualification of all major pieces of manufacturing equipment
·         Designs and oversees maintenance activities for all major manufacturing equipment
·         Ensures that all equipment is operating in line with internal and external regulatory requirements
·         Collaborates closely with manufacturing personnel to invent and implement novel devices and machines to aid in the manufacturing process of Joby aircraft

Basic Qualifications: 

·         In-depth knowledge of machine and motion control as well as mechanical systems design
·         Knowledgeable about applicable regulatory requirements such as ANSI, Cal/OSHA, and UL standards, etc.
·         Capable of selecting and programming basic PLC systems
·         Capable of positively interacting in a team environment
·         Have strong listening and verbal communication skills
·         Have good customer relations/negotiating skills required 

Desired Qualifications

·         Mechanical or electrical engineering degree 
·         At least 5 years relevant experience designing and building custom equipment
·         Manufacturing background in a factory setting a plus


Bachelor’s in engineering (electrical or mechanical preferred)
