Applications Support Scientist, Chemistry at Synthego
Redwood City, CA, US
Synthego’s Engineering team prides itself in its breadth of skill sets and expertise that are largely responsible for new product and infrastructure development. To accomplish this, they have combined engineering, automation and science to solve the problems that no single  discipline could tackle alone. As a Application Support Scientist within Synthego’s Engineering Team, you will help set the foundation of Synthego’s fully automated, cloud-enabled, RNA manufacturing facility. You will be heavily involved in process and product improvements, as well as new product development, taking on both the scientific challenges of process launches and characterization, as well as key project coordination responsibilities.

What You'll Do

    • Support and troubleshoot a high-throughput, automated, and state of the art CRISPR production facility
    • Execute studies and data gathering exercises with the aim of improving new and existing protocols for use in the factory
    • Maintain expertise on alternate methods, techniques and best practices used in the field; routinely benchmark process performance
    • Evaluate critical tradeoffs and inform decisions on resource requirements and allocations to set high-level initiative goals
    • Handle multiple projects, seeing obvious overlaps to make the implementation process more efficient and standardized
    • Gather requirements, create specifications, and document appropriately for the engineering teams
    • Support production activities; offer insight into troubleshooting methodology and problem resolution with complex instrumentation, systems or processes
    • Ensure all work and results are recorded suitably for regulatory compliance
    • Work with Synthego’s custom hardware platforms and learn what it means to push scientific boundaries forward

About You

    • Bachelors or Masters (preferred) in a Life / Physical Science
    • 2-5 years experience performing and troubleshooting automated laboratory or manufacturing processes - analysis of larger biomolecules, especially DNA and RNA, would be beneficial.
    • No matter how simple the protocol, you’ve taken the time to understand the steps, constraints, and missing characterisation work prior to creating a supportable version for production
    • Getting a good result once doesn’t cut it - you’re always after a robust process that executes well each and every time (and if it doesn’t, knowing immediately why)
    • Though an expert you may not be, the dark arts or liquid-handling are not unfamiliar to you (Hamilton prefered)
    • You understand how important well-defined qualifications are to the life-cycle of a product - IQ/OQ/PQ aren’t just letters, they are a way of life
    • You are familiar with the experimental and documentation overheads that come with being in a regulatory environment (cGxP, CLIA, CAP, ISO)
    • Familiarity with navigating and analyzing large data sets using Python, R, or analysis programs such as Tableau.
    • You are well-versed at the documentation overheads that come with doing good science - protocol definition write-up, reporting to external groups, and summarizations as would be required for publications
    • Multiple, medium-sized (quarter-long) projects running at the same time is something you are used to, both as an individual contributor and as project coordinator, and you’re looking to take on more
    • You have the ability to work diligently with minimal supervision and take initiative to drive project deadlines
    • You are meticulous in capturing goals, to-dos, and decisions made for yourself and those around you
    • You can work independently but consider yourself to be a team player

Nice to Haves

    • You may not have direct experience with CRISPR, but would understand its importance
    • Experience in a GMP/GLP environment
    • Experience with document control and design control
    • Hands-on experience in HPLC, GC, ESI, LCMS, and GCMS

Company Benefits & Perks

    • Competitive salary
    • Generous equity at an early stage company
    • Robust medical, dental and vision benefits
    • 401k Plan
    • Fully stocked kitchen and snacks
    • Free catered lunches and dinners
    • 4x daily Shuttle bus to & from San Francisco
